GDC 2009: Quality testing Halo 3

Microsoft researcher describes the thousands of hours of testing behind Halo 3 and the pain developers go through when consumers first test their game.

SAN FRANCISCO--Two years of consumer research. One thousand game testers. Thirty-five laboratory tests--close to double the amount many big-name titles have. Halo 3 was, according to Microsoft Game Studios Games User Research Group engineer John Hopson, the largest research project done by the division on a single title. Hopson used his speech at the Game Developers Conference recently to outline the mammoth testing process behind one of 2007's biggest hits, outlining what worked, what didn't, and how the final game changed as a result.

Consumer testing for Halo 3 started well before the game's launch in September 2007--almost two years, in fact, going all the way back to November 2005. Hopson, whose group had been responsible for testing the previous two Halo games, said Halo 3 was by far the most complex task of the trio. Where the original Halo had only eight laboratory studies, which focused only on the first hour of gameplay, Halo 2 ramped it up considerably by having 25 lab studies that focused on the entire single-player campaign. But even this was to be dwarfed by the third game in the franchise, which covered both single-player and multiplayer for a total of 35 separate studies.

Early testing focused on usability and was conducted well before Halo 3 was in any serious playable form. Researchers would have one-on-one sessions with testers who would try out specific discrete aspects of the game such as menu navigation before moving up to testing key moments within the game. One of the first to be tested was the first Scarab tank battle.

In initial tests, researchers basically let players loose against a Scarab, dropped some weapons on the ground, and then waited to see what strategies they would devise to bring the gigantic walking tank down. From this, Hopson's group realized that most testers didn't realize the Scarab's weak points, so the developers at Bungie changed how the target reticle moved over the weak points to give players a better indication. Some audio clues--in the form of dialogue prompts--were also added to the final game to help push players in the right direction.

But by far the most effective method of consumer testing, according to Hopson, was getting the game's developers in the same room as a group of testers while they were playing the game. "All of my research is nothing compared to having the developer being there to see how the players suffer as they play through their world," Hopson said, tongue only slightly planted in cheek. "It was very powerful stuff, but very hard to watch."

In fact, bringing the player experience closer to what the developer intended was the whole aim of Hopson's Games User Research Group when testing Halo 3. He said his team didn't try to tell Bungie how to make the game, but rather asked them what their objective was, testing it on consumers, and then seeing how closely the two aligned.

One of the key tools the team used was a visualisation map that plotted out every place testers died on any given level, as well as what they died from. This, Hopson said, gave Bungie a better idea of how the game flowed, whether there were any difficulty walls that players were coming across, and generally how well the game was playing. And speaking of difficulty, Hopson revealed that all of the testing for Halo 3 was done on normal difficulty, as the research was aimed at what the average to below-average player experience would be.

Gee Gee why are you posting about ps3 in a halo thread. So many ps3 fan bois do it why can;t you just keep it to youself. It is not as if you are getting paid to promote your console, Or is it that you want more people to play online with. Otherwise the only other possible reason is that your jealous.

The Xbox is a better gaming console.

The ps3 is an average gaming console but it has better internet and serves well doubled as a media centre.

They both have ups and downs now stop complaining.

I have 2 TVs, 2 360s, 2 copies of Halo 3, and 7 friends who like beer and Halo, it's the most fun you can have while keeping your clothes on.

Halo is just such an epic series,if we don't agree, please don't troll,no one cares if you've wasted your money on the wrong system so you cannot play Halo and you see that it's amazing but your jealous so you defend your decision in buying your inadequate console.....sigh,I hope that made sense.

I still play Halo 3 online,it just never gets old.
i don't know if i'm the first guy that owns a ps3 or has played a ps3 to read that or something, but dude, your so gonna get flamed for that. you throw insults at the most powerful console for being inadequate? you guys still don't have real time raytracing at a quarter resolution yet, we've had 1080i raytracing on every car and window in burnout paradise since the day it came out. (yes i know it's multiplat, but ps3 had plenty of extra power, so they made our reflections non-32 bit) you guys have 2 games where blood can stick to a wall, we have one where it does it and stays for the whole game. there are more exclusives on ps3, (if we're counting ones not in english. we have more of your precious rpgs) darkon has just shown why it's still popular too. it's now only 30 bucks, it's like graw 2 by now, everybody has it, cause if it's not good who cares? they wasted like 3 candy-bars worth of money on it.

+1 to NeonNinja. Me I'm personally not a big fan of the Halo series, heck I haven't even played Halo 3 on my XBOX but I do recognize what Halo brings to the table: Lots of fun. Now that it's only 30 bucks I plan on getting it.

You would think that with all that testing they would have known that the first level is lame, you don't start a game off with snipers.

This makes ODST sound like it will be carefully crafted so that we don't end up with a buggy expansion pack

I'm a software test engineer. Not for games, mind you. Air Traffic Control stuff. "Testers", rather than the consumer playtesters referred to here, are much less enjoying the game than you would think. Believe me. If they're doing their job correctly, they're trying to break the game in as many ways as possible and draw attention to any bug they find. I'm not sure I would like my precious games nearly as much if I was forced to scour them for bugs and playability issues 40 hours a week... I'm critical enough with them on my own as it is. Just be wary when you say to your moms and dads "I want to be a game tester". You REALLY want to be a game PLAYER, and there might be a small handful of people in the country, if any, who get paid a decent salary to do that.

I would love to see some of the tools that developers use for testing. GIS mapping is something my co-workers do here and it's some cool stuff. To see similar stuff used to track playing habits in a game is fascinating. I'd like to see what the data looks like, how they set that up, and how it's analyzed and used to make the game better.

Guess I better start looking for a job in the industry then...right?

Wow, the fact that used the galo term that is used so often by fanboy haters all over the world impresses me enough to care what you think. It's great that you think there is only one thing great about a game that is still one of the top online FPS games after 2 years. I don't get why people like this make such lame comments. When a game is great, it is great. If people play it for more than a year, it's silly to make lame comments about it. I don't have Killzone2, but I can recognize it is a great game and will likely to be played for more than a year. I have no idea if it will get same amount of people playing it, but the last thing I would call it is Gayzone. lol

@ NatendoWhisky64 : "I can see why video game testers get paid so much"

Careful there, tester (who are looking for bugs) and playtesters aren't the same thing. Testers are employees who are playing a portion of the game 40 hours a week and reporting problems that will (hopefully) be looked at and fixed by programmers.

On the other hand, playtesters are regular people who are invited to the studio to play a (usually) much smaller portion of the game to check if he understands what he has to do, has fun, if the difficulty is just right, etc. Usually, the playtesters will receive a small gift like a free game or a small amount of cash. Playtesters are not employees, they're just consumers invited to play the game.

Galo ain't so epic like you people (possibly crashbox360)fans out there pretend it is..........
The only great thing about it is that when it came out there was not so many successful FPS games in the industry........

Though my favorite Halo game was the second installment, I must say that Halo franchise can't be ignored, because of the power, the story, and the mission itself, Master Chief is a trend as inspiring and great as that of Star Wars or any of that kind.

Halo Universe is a versatile one, and is recently proven with Halo Wars, that even I liked it and was the first RTS I enjoyed since Star Craft, seriously, nothing wrong about Halo, and I hope they make many more sequels AND PREQUELS.
